Harmanpreet on India’s CWG Gold, 2024 success

Harmanpreet Singh reflects on India’s Hockey triumphs, says beating Australia for CWG Gold was key goal

Indian hockey captain Harmanpreet Singh recently shared his thoughts on an incredible year for the team, discussing his individual achievements, the return of the Hockey India League (HIL), and the upcoming challenges for the sport. In a candid interview, Harmanpreet reflected on India's major accomplishments, his personal milestones, and his aspirations for the future.

A year of glory and hard work

Harmanpreet Singh, who captained the Indian men's hockey team to its second consecutive Olympic bronze at the Paris 2024 Games, described the year as "amazing." Scoring an impressive 10 goals at the Olympics, Harmanpreet was the tournament's top scorer. This feat marked India's first back-to-back Olympic medals since 1972, solidifying their position as a top hockey nation.

The team didn't stop there; they triumphed in the 2024 Asian Champions Trophy, adding another feather to their cap. Harmanpreet’s leadership and skills have made him a household name in Indian sports, further emphasized by his record-breaking INR 78 lakh bid in the HIL auction. Purchased by Soorma Hockey Club, Punjab, Harmanpreet expressed pride in representing his home state in the league.

Despite the packed calendar, Harmanpreet cherishes the love and support from fans. "Our goal was to win gold at the Olympics, but we are happy with what we achieved," he said.

After a hectic season, Harmanpreet is enjoying some well-deserved downtime. Spending quality time with his family, he remarked, "It’s a wonderful time. My daughter is asleep in my hands as I speak." However, even during breaks, fitness remains a priority. "Our trainers provide routines to maintain fitness. Rest is essential, but staying in shape is equally important," he added.

Harmanpreet also enjoys following hockey matches, including the women’s team’s victory at the Asian Champions Trophy and the junior men’s team’s recent performances. He believes staying connected with the sport helps maintain focus and motivation.

The return of Hockey India League

The revival of the HIL after seven years is a significant development for Indian hockey. Harmanpreet, who credits the league for shaping his early career, is excited about its impact on younger players. "It’s a great opportunity for them to gain confidence and experience," he noted. Playing alongside foreign players in the league offers valuable learning opportunities for all participants.

Harmanpreet is particularly thrilled to play for Soorma Hockey Club. "Representing Punjab is special for me. My family is equally excited," he said. While financial incentives are welcome, his focus remains on delivering strong performances for his team.

India's next big challenge is the Pro League season starting in February 2025, followed by the Asia Cup later in the year. The team will have only a short break after the HIL before resuming training. Harmanpreet sees the back-to-back schedule as an advantage, ensuring continuity and fitness. "We’re excited and ready to perform well," he said.

On the disappointing exclusion of hockey from the 2026 Commonwealth Games, Harmanpreet expressed regret. "Our target was CWG gold, especially after beating Australia at the Olympics. It’s unfortunate, but out of our control," he remarked.

With his leadership and the team’s growing confidence, Indian hockey appears poised for continued success in the years to come.
